1.2. DEVELOPMENT OF CARTOGRAPHY

It is not known when or where the first map was created. However, it is certain that maps (or map sketches) were constructed before any written language appeared. This activity was caused by the necessity to remember significant economic or military locations. The form of such early „maps“ is documented by archaeological finds in the form of mammoth tusks, flat bones, engravings in stones and records on clay tablets or metal objects. Less frequent are finds on skins, bark, etc. The oldest objects of this type date back to Paleolithic Age (approx. 25 000 years BC).
